Welcoming Our First Grandbaby: Newborn Photography In-Home Session Wausau, WI
Our family has some exciting news! We just welcomed our very first grandbaby! Allen and I are still in the middle of toddlerhood with our youngest (and definitely last!), but now we also get the sweet honor of being called “Grandpa and Grandma.” What a season this is, and what a gift.
Meet little Walter! We were so excited to meet him, and of course, I couldn’t resist pulling out my camera for his very first photo session with Grandma! My inspiration for this session was cozy, calm, and natural-and good thing too! Walter made it perfectly clear that he wasn’t interested in wraps or posed setups. What he wanted were snuggles, a cozy blanket, and his new highland cow stuffy- and really, that’s all a baby needs anyway. The most meaningful images come from following their lead and capturing those natural, real moments.
I will always choose the baby’s comfort over a pose. Honestly, the real reason for newborn photos isn’t to show off cute props and poses (even though they’re adorable), but to preserve those fleeting first details — the wrinkly foreheads, tiny fingers and toes, big yawns, and every little reminder of just how small they once were.
Even Walter’s uncles gave me a hand. Liam helped set up my backdrop (or possibly hindered the setup- I always called Everett my ‘little hinderer’ before I called him my helper, and now that title is lovingly passed on to Liam). Everett was able to hold up an extra light so I could get Walter’s face lit up just right, while Grandpa stepped in to help comfort Walter and keep him nice and warm throughout the session.
Congratulations to Nicole and Dominick — we are so excited for this new chapter. Watching Nicole step into motherhood has been incredibly special, and I already know Walter is one blessed little boy.
As a newborn photographer in Wausau, WI, this session reminded me why I love capturing babies just as they are. Not every newborn loves being wrapped or posed, and that’s okay. The most beautiful photos often come from leaning into their personalities, honoring their comfort, and focusing on the connection between baby and family.
If you’re expecting or recently welcomed a little one here in Wausau, Stevens Point, or Central Wisconsin, I’d love to help you document these fleeting first days. Every baby has their own story — and my goal is to create newborn portraits that feel authentic, timeless, and filled with love.
